We'll call her American Hippie Chick. When American Hippie Chick needed a debt settlement service, she looked to American Debt Girl for answers. American Debt Girl suggested that her sister enroll in a debt management program and sent her to the company she used for her debt consolidation loan.

When American Hippie Chick went to the debt management company that the American Debt girl recommended, they offered her debt settlement as an option. "What's debt settlement?" she asked, to which the debt management professional answered, "Debt settlement is a debt elimination tool that allows you to pay off your debt at 30-50 cents on the dollar. The appeal of a debt settlement program is the fact that you can erase your debt completely by paying less than you actually owe. However, you have to have it paid off in a year or less. Don't debt settlement programs sound great?"

"Of course they do, but that would still be quite a sum for me to come up with that fast," American Hippie Chick said. "Can't I take more time?"

"Not with our company. But some debt settlement services will allow you to take up to three years to pay," the debt management professional explained.

In the end, American Hippie Chick chose a debt consolidation plan over debt settlement. But if you think you can come up with the money right away, a debt settlement program might be good for you. The only way to know for sure is to talk to a debt management professional about your debt situation and to see if s/he can make referrals to a particular debt settlement company. Who knows? It may turn out the debt settlement companies would be a better match for you than the debt consolidation companies.
